Project Cost: $3,000
Date: Summer Project

In this video we visit our customer, Dave, in Kildeer, IL to tackle a common but often overlooked issue: poor attic ventilation.

Challenge: Hot, Humid Upper Floors and Overworked AC

When longtime client Dave Beischer contacted us, he was facing a frustrating problem—his upstairs bedrooms were unbearably hot and humid during the summer, even with the air conditioner running nearly 24/7. Despite his AC being set to 65°F, the upper rooms remained uncomfortable.

Dave initially believed the issue was poor insulation. But after a thorough inspection, we found the real culprit: a complete lack of attic ventilation. His home had solid wood soffits without any vents, preventing fresh air from entering the attic. This caused:

  • Stale, trapped air in the attic
  • Increased humidity and condensation
  • Risk of mold growth
  • An inefficient, constantly running HVAC system

Solution: Smart Ventilation with LP SmartSide

Our goal was to create a continuous airflow system to allow the attic to “breathe.” Here’s how we solved the problem:

  1. Evaluation: Identified zero soffit vents; attic lacked passive airflow.
  2. Strategic Cuts: Carefully cut through the existing solid wood soffits to open intake pathways.
  3. Air Channels: Installed rafter vents inside the attic to guide airflow upward toward the ridge vent.
  4. Smart Upgrade: Installed LP SmartSide vented soffit panels, seamlessly matching Dave’s beautiful cedar exterior. These not only perform well but look great too.

Result: Cool, Dry, Efficient Home

After just one day of work, Dave’s attic was properly ventilated, resulting in a noticeably cooler upstairs even during hot summer days. The humidity levels have dropped significantly, creating a more comfortable living environment while also reducing the risk of mold growth. With improved airflow, the home is now more energy-efficient, allowing the HVAC system to work less and save on energy costs. Beyond functionality, the new LP SmartSide vented soffits have enhanced the home’s exterior appearance, blending perfectly with its natural cedar finish.

Key Takeaways

  • Ventilation and Insulation Work Together: While insulation helps retain conditioned air, proper attic ventilation is essential to regulate temperature and humidity. In Dave’s case, ventilation was the missing link—solving the root cause of discomfort and excess moisture.
  • Smart Materials Matter: LP SmartSide vented soffits offer a durable and attractive solution that improves both airflow and curb appeal.
  • Built on Trust: A 20+ year relationship with Dave highlights Holda Construction’s commitment to long-term client satisfaction and reliable craftsmanship.

A Trusted Relationship—20 Years Strong

This project was more than just a fix—it was a reunion. Dave first worked with Mariusz over 20 years ago on siding for a previous home. When he faced a new issue, he didn’t hesitate to reach out:

"I met Mariusz more than 20 years ago when he sided my last home. I called him out of the blue to give me a quote on my attic project and it was like I just saw him yesterday..."

"...The venting looks great and adds a ton of much needed attic airflow. And he saved me money by not needing to insulate. Couldn’t be happier and highly recommend you consider Holda Construction for your insulation and ventilation needs. 👍"
