Today we’d like to discuss what we feel is one of the most important ways you can extend the life of roof and siding on your home or business. We invite you to join our founder, Mariusz Holda, as he explores an overflowing gutter issue at a customer’s home.
In video below, you can see a gutter system installation which has used a 3”x4” oversized downspout and 5-inch k-style gutters. In the midst of the very severe storms impacting much of the Illinois area this week, our customer complained that they were getting significant overflow of water and debris, and this visit was made to explore the issue.
It also brings us up to roof level where Mariusz quickly locates a clogged downspout outlet, muddled with debris. The gutter itself has accumulated a significant amount of debris from surrounding trees, which begins our discussion about the importance of cleaning out your gutter system.
Importance of Cleaning Your Gutters
All homeowners should clean their gutters regularly to prevent the various problems that clogs can cause. When gutters are not regularly cleared, debris such as the leaves and twigs seen here, as well as seeds, acorns, nesting material, and dirt can accumulate and block the flow of water.
These obstacles can cause several issues, including:
Water Damage
When gutters are clogged, water can overflow and cause damage to the exterior of the house, including the siding, foundation, and landscaping. Water can also seep into the interior of the house, damaging ceilings, walls, and floors.
Pest Infestations
Debris in the gutters can attract pests such as rodents, insects, and birds. These pests can build nests and cause further damage to the gutters and the surrounding areas.
Roof Damage
Water that overflows from clogged gutters can damage the roof, leading to leaks and other structural problems.
Mold and Mildew Growth
Water that accumulates in clogged gutters can create a damp environment that promotes the growth of mold and mildew. These substances can cause health problems for the occupants of the house.

Regular Cleaning
Cleaning gutters regularly can prevent these problems and prolong the life of the gutter system. It’s recommended to clean gutters at least twice a year, in the spring and fall, or more often if the house is surrounded by trees or experiences heavy rainfall.
Oversized Downspouts
The greater diameter of oversized downspout pipe allows a larger path of exit for the debris that does accumulate. Having the 5-inch downspout can result in less work and maintenance for the homeowner, as the gutters and downspout can often flush themselves without intervention.
In conclusion, gutter cleaning is an essential maintenance task that should not be overlooked. Neglecting your gutters can lead to serious and costly damage to your home’s foundation, roof, and overall structure.
By regularly cleaning and maintaining your gutters, you can ensure that they function properly and protect your home from potential water damage.
